Other Services
THERAPY & SPECIALIST SERVICES Therapists and specialist teachers who work in consultation with parents/caregivers and teachers provide a valuable service. They are able to work with students turning 5 only (Pre primary age). Therapy services are provided by staff from Therapy Focus.
Physiotherapist: Our physio assists students who have difficulty with movements, mobility and posture. She assesses each child's physical ability and programs for them to reach their maximum physical potential.
The Occupational Therapist assesses students in the areas of daily living, arm and hand function, sensory motor integration, prevocational, recreational activities and community living skills. The therapist also prescribes adaptive equipment to encourage independence in self care and fine motor activities.
Physiotherapist and Occupational therapists both have expertise in the areas of physical management including seating, alternative positioning, lifting, correct handling and modification of equipment.
Speech Therapists can assist students who have difficulties with communication both verbal and non verbal (also with eating, drinking and saliva control). Also, the speech therapists assesses students with communication problems, providing diagnosis, programs and in some cases, treatment of speech, voice and language disorders.
CYCLING LIKE OTHER KIDS
Mobility, exercise, improved self-esteem, independent decision-making, fun and integration into the community are the goals. How do we plan to do this?
All children need regular exercise to stay fit and healthy. However ‘normal’ bicycles are not appropriate for our children and in order to experience the pleasure of riding just like other children of early intervention age we need to fund a set of adapted specialised bikes which parents may borrow for a ‘try out”.
Our aims therefore are:
TRANSITION STUDENTS
For students who will be attending more integrated settings, at some stage in their education, programs are also designed to teach "classroom survival skills" such as:
MEDICAL SERVICES
School Nurse: The nurses play an active role in maintaining optimum care for students with fragile health and providing increased physical comfort so that students can develop their greatest possible potential.
Dental Health: Dental services are provided by the School Dental Services based at Carlisle Primary School. Parents are responsible for transporting their child to and from appointments.
PSYCHOLOGY
Psychological services are available, upon referral, from the Canning Education District Office and the Disability Service Commission. Psychologists can assess intellectual, personality and social functioning and provide advice on behavioural management and counselling.
TRANSPORT
Students travel to and from school on specially equipped buses which are under contract to the Public Transport Authority. During the day the school is able to use Snoopy or hire an appropriate bus to transport students to other schools for integration activities, for school outings, and to recreational and community skills programme settings.
The Carson Street School Snoopy bus is used on school outings. We now have the use of a bus which is on loan to the school from the Disabled Children's Association and this means that we are able to transport students who use wheelchairs on excursions. The school sends its special thanks to the Disabled Children's Association. THE 'SNOEZELEN' ROOM (MULTI-SENSORY)
The Snoezelen consists of pleasurable sensory experiences generated in an atmosphere of trust and relaxation. The sensory experiences are arranged to stimulate the primary sense without the need for intellectual activity. Trust and relaxation are encouraged by a non-directive or enabling approach being adopted by the helper or carer.
