MY TIME
Carson Street School has the pleasure of continuing to host two My Time groups for children under the age of 4 and their parents.
The My Time program is coordinated by the Parenting Research Centre and is funded by the Australian Government Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA).
We have 15 enthusiastic children attending each week, and they participate in a range of activities to develop skills in all developmental areas.
Parents attending with their children have the opportunity to discuss parenting issues, spend quality time with their children, and to socialise with other parents of children with special needs.
This year we are situated at the Shelley Playgroup building in Adlam Crescent Shelley

The Conductive Education Parent & Child is funded through by the Department of Education for 0-4year old children with motor disabilities. The Parent and Child groups currently run Tuesday to Thursday, with up to 3 sessions per day. Each child will attend approximately two sessions of 1 - 2.5hrs per week, with a parent or carer.
Each group follows a daily routine of activities to suit their needs, working in lying, sitting or standing and walking task series', mealtime / snack time and self care as well as hand tasks / finemotor activities linked to the Australian Early Years Learning Framework. The children's communication skills are developed throughout the programme, using various forms of Alternative and Augmentative Communication systems, as appropriate to their needs.
Parent learning workshops such as 'The Importance of Communication', 'What is Conductive Education?' etc. are offered regularly to offer additional support and guidance to families.

Early Intervention is very pleased to be in Bluegum this year. We are enjoying being back among the big gum trees, and the children are delighted with the sandpit and undercover play area.
Our class consists of 6 fantastic children who are all enthusiastic learners, and two teachers (Karen Osborne and Barb Wheeler) who job share the role. Together with our dedicated team of Education Assistants, we endeavour to provide a positive and safe environment for the children to develop the skills, creativity and imagination necessary for a lifetime of learning.
Throughout the week we participate in fun, hands on learning experiences as part of our integrated curriculum. Play is an important part of our learning program as it contributes significantly to all areas of development. Our daily routines promote a strong sense of wellbeing and foster independence.
We are all looking forward to a busy and productive year!

2012 is already proving to be a busy and very exciting year for the 11 pupils and staff in Redgum. The kindy, pre-primary and year 1 aged children have already shown that they like to work hard and achieve as a group. All the children take great pride in their own and others work.
We all use PODD communication books to help us to talk to everybody at school and at home. The team is working very hard to help us learn our PODD books so that we can communicate our needs, wants, desires and opinions as independently and as often as possible.
This year we have lots of exciting topics to learn about through science, maths, literacy, art and society and environment. We practise our phonics and counting skills everyday through games and songs to help us remember. Once a week we also have Barbara teaching us games during physical education. We get to swimming with Kerry on Wednesdays and Thursdays and enjoy music with Tim on Friday mornings.
Through Conductive Education we learn how to be independent during our everyday lives, like self care. We practise lots of skills and how to control and move our bodies in a correct manner during the Task Series (sitting, standing, lying, hand) and then we apply the skills we have learned during walking, snack, lunch, play and lesson times. We are all making great progress with these skills.

We have settled well into our new classroom after moving next door. We are getting on well with our new neighbours in Red Gum and are looking forward to lots of Friday afternoon play dates!
We work extremely hard doing lots of work towards our physical, communication and academic development. We are supported to do as much as we can with independence. We all use PODD books to communicate our fantastic ideas, wants and needs.
The year has got off to a good start with exciting science investigations in the swimming pool and creating our own aliens! Come and see them if you dare!
We have an excursion planned for ‘Horizons’ and ‘Sci-tech’ during Term 1 and there will be more to come throughout this school year.
We have excellent support from the therapists at Therapy Focus including Jasmine the physio, Shannon the OT and we are looking forward to meeting our new Speechie Denise in March.

Room 1 is an Aspects of Conductive Education classroom and we will be working on using our bodies with greater independence through walking, sit to stand task series and being actively involved in all learning through-out the day.
This year we are looking at the following themes-Fairytales/ Traditional tales, Under the Sea, Journeys and Forrest’s around the World/ The Australian Bush. We will be exploring these themes across all learning areas (art, literacy, mathematics, health and physical education, society and environment, technology and enterprise and science). We will be working hard at literacy and using the Four blocks of reading and writing each day by doing self selected reading, guided reading, writing and working with words.

Room 2 in 2012 has six very eager learners with the combination of pre-primary through to year three students. To assist the students in furthering and developing their skills Room 2 have five very dedicated staff members, Andrea (teacher), Anne, Debbie, Lindsey and Ros (Education Assistants). Working as a team, with one common goal of assisting and encouraging the students’ progress to the best of their ability is the aim.
Many programs are implemented daily to support the educational development of each individual student and to ensure consistent learning opportunities across all learning areas for all students. Our timetable has been organised to provide students allocated time to focus on developing specific skills one on one with a staff member within areas such as literacy, numeracy, and communication. Independence is a priority within the classroom and wherever possible the students are encouraged to complete tasks as independently as possible.
We are all looking forward to a great year in Room 2 and for our students to achieve some great milestones.
Room 5Room 5 is a class of 7 students, 6 boys and 1 girl in year 2 / 3/ 4. Its’ a lovely group of students who are all very interesting to work with!
At the moment Deanne Jones, the class teacher is on sick leave and Connie Jakopo is covering the class for the time being. Deanne will return in term two. There are five Education Assistants: Roberta (Monday to Friday), Leonie (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday), Jacky (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday), Elaine (Tuesday & Wednesday) and Susan (Thursday and Friday).They are all hard working and share the same expectations and goals for the students.
The main focus this year is to promote independence in our students, get them to do as much as possible on their own. Communication is also a priority in our class and we use verbal, signing, PECs and the PODD, all depending on individual needs. We cover a wide range of subjects including Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Art, Technology and Enterprise. Our themes for the year include Fairytales, Under the Sea and Forests around the world and Journeys. We are currently doing Fairytales. The class also does Swimming, Physical Education, Music, Cooking and Horse Riding.
All these activities keep us busy and our students have lots of fun learning. We look forward to a great year!
Room 7Room 7 consists of 4 amazing year 5 children and 3 fantastic year 7 children, who are joined by class teacher, Silvia Clarke and hard working and enthusiastic education assistants, Dallas Bird (M-TH), Elaine Sparke (Fri), Anna Mirco (M-F) and Aileen Clarke (M-F).
A strong focus is communication, and as such we access a range of communication devices to best suit each student. Our other key focus areas include independence and socialisation skills.
We are excited with the topics for this year being; our country, myths and legends, outer space and celebrations. We look forward to bringing these themes into our daily class work.
Our daily program involves the TEACCH program, along with following the core subjects as outlined in the curriculum. We are also excited to have weekly swimming, music, library, physical education, cooking and sensory Room time.Room 9
Welcome to a newly revamped room 9.
With staffing and student changes we have now achieved the perfect mix. Our seven students, James, Ben, Adrian, Kawanna, Lara, Jessie and Kaitlin are proving to be an hilarious bunch. We work hard on our physical skills and then play hard with our communication and socialisation. There is always laughter and with everyone trying so hard it is a joyful room to enter.
Our team of Sam, Suzanne, Cinnamon and Kaoru (plus me, Rose, as team coordinator) work well together and share the same expectations and goals for the students. They know this and are responding well to the consistency of approach and expectation.
We are all looking forward to a fantastic year. Pop in and see us sometime.

The Belmay Satellite Class

The Belmay Satellite Class started their school year 2012 with great success. We were allocated another fulltime EA and so we welcomed Mrs M to our team. We have finally been given a classroom at Carson Street School on the Wednesdays, so we feel extremely spoilt this year!!
We also welcomed a new student into our room, which brings our total to 7 students, 5 boys and 2 girls, ranging from Grades 4 to 7. The students of the Satellite Class are offered an Inclusive setting based at the Belmay Primary School for 4 days a week, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. On Wednesday the students are based at Carson Street School, where they are able to access Specialist Programs such as Swimming, Flex Ability and LOTE .
At Belmay Primary the students integrate with their mainstream classes for Phys. Ed and any other planned whole school Incursions. They also go out to play with the mainstream students during both recesses. This year the students from the Satellite Class will be participating in an Air Grants Program awarded to Belmay Primary as they develop a Musical Garden with Artists in Residence . Once again there are plans for WADSA to organize a Tabloid Day at Belmay Primary School, where both Schools are able to meet and participate in a variety of activities using specialised equipment, thus trying to heighten the awareness of Disabled Sports.
This year our priorities will be Communication, Mathematics, Health & Physical Education and Behaviour Management. All our programs are catered to meet the specific needs of individual students. Specialised Programs implemented in the classroom are, The Primary Movement Program, Direct Instructions, aspects of the TEACHH Program, Literacy and Mathematics Mastery Files and the use of the Smart Board technology.
An important aspect of our learning is having fortnightly visits into the Community. This year our excursions will be focusing on using Smart Rider cards when accessing Public Transport.
At the end of the year the class will be attending a 3 day camp and we are hoping yet again that it will be at Cunderdin Agricultural College. It seems that our positive relationship which has continued to develop between our main contact Nakita Kitson and the staff at the College is of paramount importance to our students and we would like to continue our friendship with them.Burbridge Satellite Class

The newly established Burbridge Satellite class is an Aspects of Conductive Education class based north of the river. There are currently 9 fun, bright, excited learners in the class, ranging from Kindy to Year 4.
All of the children use their PODD communication books/ Dynavox V-Max to talk to their friends and to help with their work. We cover a wide range of subjects including Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Art and Technology and Enterprise. We use the Literacy scheme MEville to WEville so our lessons are varied and exciting. We are also lucky to have access to a wide range of lessons at Burbridge, including swimming, dance and drumming!
Everyone has a variety of individual physical tasks that they are working on and through our group task series' we are learning how to control our movements, to move into various positions such as sitting to standing, to improve our walking skills and to become more independent in our every day lives.
We are excited about the year ahead in our new setting, whilst maintaining strong links with all of our friends at Carson Street.
