MY TIME
Carson Street School has the pleasure of continuing to host two My Time groups for children under the age of 4 and their parents.
The My Time program is coordinated by the Parenting Research Centre and is funded by the Australian Government Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA).
We have 15 enthusiastic children attending each week, and they participate in a range of activities to develop skills in all developmental areas.
Parents attending with their children have the opportunity to discuss parenting issues, spend quality time with their children, and to socialise with other parents of children with special needs.
This year we are situated at the Shelley Playgroup building in Adlam Street Shelley
Room 7 Teacher: Rose Linton

Welcome to the wonderful world of Room 7. There have been changes afoot in 2011. Brayden and Jayde have been joined by Lucas, Liam, Zac and Hannah. Deb and I (Rose Linton) have been joined on the staffing front by Grace (on loan to Blue Gum for first term), Heather and Trask. With a whole lot of new things to learn about each other it has been an interesting start to the year.
Horse riding still features in our timetable and our only outing at the moment. We all love swimming and music and we’re excited to have Rachael and Kate from Therapy Focus doing interesting stuff with us on Wednesday.
We’re all looking forward to getting iPads this year so watch out for us on the net!

We have a very exciting year ahead of us in Room 2! The 9 children, ranging from pre-primary to Year 3, are a fantastic group of learners who each bring something special to our classroom.
We use PODD communication books and Dynavox V-Max communication technology to help us to talk to our friends and to help us with our work. We have a new Smartboard in class and we can’t wait to explore it and become even more interactive with our learning!
In class we learn phonics every day, using the Jolly Phonics scheme and we enjoy going for phonics walks around the school. We like maths, art activities, learning about Science through the Primary Connections scheme of work, music, dancing and swimming.
Through our task series we are learning how to control our bodies, to get up from sitting to a standing position, to tackle obstacles and to become more independent in our every day lives.
We have some great topics to cover this year and lots of fun to be had. 2011 is going to be a great year for us.
Belmay Satellite Class Teacher: Melinda Davies

The Belmay Satellite Class has started 2011 very smoothly. The staff and 5 students have remained the same and we have welcomed 2 new girls into our classroom which means we have a much needed balance between the girls and boys!!!
The class currently has 7 students; 4 boys and 3 girls, ranging from Grades 3 to 6.
The Satellite Class is situated at Belmay Primary School for 4 days a week - Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. On Wednesday the students are based at Carson Street School, where they are able to access Specialist Programs such as Swimming, FlexAbility and LOTE (Spanish). At Belmay Primary the students integrate with their mainstream classes for Phys. Ed and any other planned whole school incursions. They also go out to play with the mainstream students during both recesses.
Once again there are plans for WADSA to organize a Tabloid Day at Belmay Primary School, where both Schools are able to meet and participate in a variety of activities using specialised equipment, thus trying to heighten the awareness of Disabled Sports.
This year our priorities will be Communication, Mathematics, Health & Physical Education and Behaviour Management. All our programs are catered to meet the specific needs of individual students. Specialised Programs implemented in the classroom are, The Primary Movement Program, Direct Instructions, aspects of the TEACHH Program, Literacy and Mathematics Mastery Files, the Peggy Lego Progam and the use of the Smart Board technology.
An important aspect of our learning is having fortnightly visits into the Community. This year our excursions will be focusing on using Smart Cards when accessing Public Transport. Last year the students did a program with the RSPCA and will hopefully continue to organise some fundraising events for their cause. Once again this year we would like to have a 3 day camp at the Cunderdin Agricultural College, which proved to be a huge success for both students and staff from both schools.
We are all looking forward to a busy and successful year.

Redgum is an aspects of Conductive Education class for students aged between Pre-Primary and Year 1. Redgum has 4 Education Assistants Lucya Weiland, Jo Matthews, Shanelle Matthews and Kate Bamford. The Staff in Redgum focus on assisting the students to acess the curriculum whilst maintaining a strong focus on becoming as independent as possible across all aspects of daily life skills. Silvia Clarke is the Classroom Teacher Monday to Friday, with Teacher/Conductor Natalie Fitzpatrick in class Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, as we do our lying task and sit to stand task series. We are all looking forward to all the new opportunities that we will have to learn and have fun in 2011!

Our class consists of 8 fantastic kindy, pre-primary and year 1 children who all are enthusiastic learners, and two teachers (Tiffany Plant and Karen Tonge) who job share the role. We also have Roberta, Ruth, Dianne, Susan and Bianca who are the education assistants that make sure everything goes to plan!
Our learning priorities are communication, socialisation and independency. We have fun, hands on learning experiences which are theme-based changing term to term, that cater for all needs to achieve our goals outlined in our Individual Education Plans.
Our daily program involves the TEACCH program using visuals, as well as other programs such as primary movement and ABA. We use a range of communication devices in our class so that each has their own that suits the particular needs of the child.
Our class accesses the community often on excursions to teach social skills in daily living, as well as specialised school-based lessons like swimming, music and phys-ed

Bluegum is an Aspects of Conductive Education classroom, Year 1 & 2 class. We are working on using our bodies with greater independence and being actively involved in all learning throughout the day.
This year we are exploring the themes Our School, Healthy Living, Dinosaurs and Light and Dark.
The theme for term 1 is Our School. We will be looking at our favourite thing about school, our friends, people who help us at school, what we are good at, our neighbouring classrooms, how we get to and from school, playgrounds, what we would do if we were the teacher, and learning about other schools.
We are exploring these themes across all learning areas (art, literacy, mathematics, health & physical education, society & environment, technology & enterprise and science). We will be working hard particularly in our communication, literacy and physical goals.
I am looking forward to what I know will be a fantastic year in Bluegum!
Yellowgum Teacher: Andrea Blair

Yellowgum in 2011 has six very eager learners with the combination of Year 1 and Year 2 students. To assist the students in furthering and developing their skills Yellowgum has five very dedicated staff members: Andrea (teacher), Anne, Alison, Lindsey and Ros (Education Assistants). Working as a team, with one common goal of assisting and encouraging the students’ progress to the best of their ability is the aim.
Many programs are implemented daily to support the educational development of each individual student and to ensure consistent learning opportunities across all learning areas for all students.
Our timetable has been organised to provide students allocated time to focus on developing specific skills one on one with a staff member within areas such as literacy, numeracy, and communication. Independence is a priority within the classroom and wherever possible the students are encouraged to complete tasks as independently as possible.
We are all looking forward to a great year in Yellowgum and for our students to achieve some great milestones.
Room 8 Teacher: Barb Wheeler

We have a fantastic classroom for 2011! All of the students and staff are excited at the prospect of the new school year. The students this year will have the opportunity to expand their ideas and learning experiences both in and outside of the classroom.
There will be a focus on literacy, numeracy, communication, behaviour and independence. We will be covering several different themes over the course of the year that will see us visiting places like Sci-tech and the Post Office, It should be a fantastic year.
Room 5

Welcome back to all the students in Room 5 this year. We hope you had an enjoyable and relaxing holiday and are ready to meet the challenges of 2011. The staff this year are Deanne Jones, Aileen, Anna and Teresa. We have six very interesting students and they are Aidan, David, Fransisca, Jayden, Lucas and Stephanie.
The focus of our class program is to develop the students’ social competencies, independence and communication skills. Independence is a very high priority in our room and we encourage all visitors to our room to promote or encourage this as much as possible.
This year some of our students will participate in the RDA horse-riding program, while the remaining students participate in an Occupational/Physio Therapy program together with pupils from Room 8. We will continue with swimming, physical education and music activities, as well as classroom-based work programs.
We will be shopping every second Thursday and cooking every Friday as it gives the students practical skills to use in everyday situations.
Our theme this term is Dinosaurs and it will be taught across all learning areas.
Room 9 – ACE class (Aspects of Conductive Education)

The 6 pupils and staff of Room 9 have an exciting year ahead of them. The 6 pupils of Room 9 work hard through Aspects of Conductive Education alongside curriculum areas to achieve their highest potential, both physically and academically.
The students are encouraged to use PODD communication books, Step by Step Switches, Dual Head Switches and Tech Scan 8’s to communicate their needs, wants, desires and opinions as independently and as often as possible. These methods help them to interact with their peers and other adults across the school.
In class we learn and practice phonics, maths, art, science, music, phys ed, swimming and health awareness in fun and interactive ways. The enjoyment of learning has been enhanced by the instalment of our new SMART board.
Through our Conductive Education task series the pupils in Room 9 learn how to control and move their bodies in a correct manner and as independently as possible.
Room 9 is proving to be a very successful and enjoyable class so far and everyone is looking forward to the rest of 2011.

2011 is already proving to be a busy and very exciting year for the 6 pupils and staff in Banksia. The kindy and pre-primary aged children have already shown that they like to work hard and achieve as a group. All the children take great pride in their own and other’s work.
We all use PODD communication books to helps us to talk to everybody at school and at home. Yvette is working very hard to help us learn our PODD books so that we can communicate our needs, wants, desires and opinions as independently and as often as possible.
This year we have lots of exciting topics to learn about through science, maths, literacy, art and society and environment. We practise our phonics and counting skills everyday through games and songs to help us remember. Once a week we also have Colin teaching us games during physical education.
Through Conductive Education we learn how to be independent during our everyday lives, like self care. We practise lots of skills and how to control and move our bodies in a correct manner during the Task Series (sitting, standing, lying, hand) and then we apply the skills we have learned during walking, snack, lunch, play and lesson times. We are all making great progress with these skills.
We are all looking forward getting more independent, to learning lots of new skills and knowledge and to celebrating our achievements. We are sure there will be lots.
